Jordan's projected soil carbon is an investment scenario, not field evidence

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Jordan
System
Arid agriculture and soil carbon

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers combined 1998–2023 crop market data with literature-based sequestration coefficients and Monte Carlo sensitivity modelling to rank management and crop combinations. Potential horticultural gains were much higher in some scenarios, but not field-verified.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Pilot investment may be warranted, but issue no farm-level carbon claims without measured baselines, repeat soil sampling, additionality and realistic water and adoption costs.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

All gains are modelled potentials; national statistics cannot validate farm-scale carbon change. The authors explicitly lack measured local soil carbon.

Economic and sequestration simulations still require actual soil sampling.

Jordan's TA'ZIZ restoration project is closing with a useful implementation record—not yet an impact verdict

Evidence
Institutional / NGO report
Geography
Petra and Shoubak, Jordan
System
Dryland cultural landscapes and restoration sites

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

IUCN's September project-closeout reports three years of TA'ZIZ activities around Petra and Shoubak, including ecosystem-restoration work, plant nurseries, nature-based solutions, training and community participation intended to strengthen biodiversity and climate resilience.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Institutional implementation evidence matters because conservation success depends on delivery capacity, local participation and maintenance—not only ecological design. The next evidence need is whether the installed actions persist and produce measurable ecological outcomes after project closure.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is the implementing organization's completion report, not an independent impact evaluation. Activity counts, training and restoration outputs should not be treated as evidence that biodiversity or climate-resilience outcomes have already been achieved.

IUCN reports three years of restoration, nursery and community work around Petra and Shoubak, but project completion should not be confused with independently measured ecological recovery.
