Canadian lakes are following opposite phosphorus trajectories

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
More than 15,000 Canadian lakes
System
Freshwater lakes / watershed nutrients

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Remote-sensing reconstruction trained with 35,452 field measurements and 386,727 Landsat images estimates 1984–2025 total phosphorus in 15,240 lakes larger than five square kilometres. Arctic tundra lake estimates increased; boreal, temperate, agricultural and urban watershed classes mostly declined.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

National lake averages disguise different watershed mechanisms and may misdirect monitoring effort.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These are model estimates, not a direct annual water sample at every lake; small lakes were excluded.

Mozambique's miombo woodlands often burned again within a year

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Niassa Special Reserve, Mozambique
System
Dry and moist miombo woodlands; fire regimes

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Landsat-derived annual burned-area maps on a one-kilometer grid tracked Niassa fires from 2013 to 2024. About 69.6% of the reserve burned more than six times across that period; median fire-return intervals were approximately one year in most vegetation classes, shortest in dry lowland miombo.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The management question is not whether an African woodland has fire, but which patch mosaics, vegetation types and recovery periods it experiences. Frequent reburning and rare refugia need to be mapped before imposing a uniform burn interval.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Remote-sensing resolution and fire-detection choices shape reconstructed intervals. Fire frequency alone does not establish ecological damage or prescribe a universal suppression policy.

Ara’s wetland signal has weakened as urban land expanded—but satellite indices are not biodiversity surveys

Evidence
Peer-reviewed remote-sensing time-series study
Geography
Ara, Bihar, India
System
Urban wetland / peri-urban landscape

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A Landsat analysis spanning 1995–2025 used multiple surface indices to track water, vegetation and built-up change around Ara. The authors report progressive declines in open-water and vegetation signals as urban land expanded, with strong seasonal differences in some vegetation metrics.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Remote sensing can provide a durable early-warning layer where long-term field monitoring is missing. It is particularly useful for showing whether hydrologic and vegetative space is being compressed by urbanization before individual projects are evaluated in isolation.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Surface indices are proxies for land and water condition, not field measurements of biodiversity, water chemistry or wetland function. Classification and seasonal effects matter, and the study should not be read as direct evidence of bird or aquatic-community decline.

Three decades of Landsat indices around Ara, India, track declining open-water and vegetation signals alongside urban growth, offering a landscape-change warning without directly measuring species response.
