High flood-model accuracy can hide how a map will fail in the next flood

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Global published flood-susceptibility modeling literature, 2010–2024
System
Flood-risk landscapes; GIS modeling; spatial validation

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A review of 200 peer-reviewed flood-susceptibility modeling studies found that roughly 73% used validation that did not fully account for spatial dependence, likely exaggerating generalization. About 48% did not quantify uncertainty, and only around 6% used a probability-calibration assessment.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The counter-signal is that an impressive AUC on a map is not a flood prediction people can safely use. Model evaluation should hold out spatially independent areas, expose residual uncertainty, and test the actual planning decision that a map is intended to support.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The counts describe practices in a heterogeneous sample of published studies, not a meta-analytic correction for every model. The estimated validation inflation varies by data and design; the review does not establish accuracy for a specific floodplain.

Marine food-web indicators can change when uncertainty is carried through the model instead of hidden

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Northeast U.S. continental shelf
System
Marine food webs and ecosystem-based fisheries assessment

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An Ecological Applications study used three neighboring mass-balanced food-web models and a Bayesian uncertainty framework to propagate uncertainty in trophic parameters into ecosystem indicators. The model ensembles produced meaningful differences in metrics such as relative ascendancy and energetic efficiency, linked in part to differences in benthic versus pelagic organization.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Ecosystem indicators become more decision-useful when their uncertainty travels with them. A single food-web score can look precise enough to rank systems or management states even when plausible parameter values materially change that comparison.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These are model-derived ecosystem indicators, not direct measurements of resilience or fishery performance. The three models share some regional data sources, and conceptual links between indicators and resilience should not be treated as experimentally demonstrated causal relationships.

Three neighboring Northeast U.S. shelf food-web models produced different ecosystem-indicator distributions once parameter uncertainty was propagated, complicating simple comparisons of resilience or maturity.
