Planting trees in old savanna changed which birds remained, not always how many

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Western Maharashtra, India
System
Tropical savanna / afforestation / birds

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Birds were counted at 15 paired old-growth savanna and exotic tree plantation sites spanning 459–1007 millimeters of annual rainfall. Averaged across sites, afforestation did not significantly alter total richness or abundance. But the composition shifted: savanna specialists declined, woodland specialists increased, and richness responses differed at the wetter, drier and intermediate ends of the rainfall range.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Counting more trees or even retaining an aggregate species total is not equivalent to conserving the original open-habitat community. Management should identify which ecosystem and species groups its planting goal is intended to serve.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The paired-site comparison is observational and confined to one Indian region and tree-plantation context. It does not imply all native-tree restoration or all agroforestry has the same effect.

Plants and mycorrhizal fungi responded differently to rainfall change—but their spatial variability converged under drought

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Inner Mongolia, China
System
Temperate grassland

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A field experiment compared ambient precipitation with 50% reductions and increases. Plant and arbuscular-mycorrhizal-fungal diversity responded differently, but their spatial compositional variability converged under reduced precipitation; AMF variation was driven primarily by abiotic soil filtering.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Aboveground and belowground diversity do not have to move together even when drought reorganizes both communities. That complicates attempts to infer soil symbiont response from vegetation monitoring alone.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The experiment represents one temperate-grassland system and a defined precipitation manipulation. Community-level sequencing and spatial-variability metrics do not directly establish changes in ecosystem function.

Thinning and fire helped remnant savanna plants return to former farmland

Evidence
Peer-reviewed long-term field experiment
Geography
Southeastern United States
System
Longleaf pine savanna / former agricultural soils

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

At 12 sites, paired remnant and recovering plots were assigned different thinning and burn frequencies. Combined high-frequency fire and thinning produced about three to four times more remnant indicator plant species in recovering areas than passive regeneration.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Remnant patches are living propagule sources; restoration success depends on keeping those sources and conditions that enable dispersal.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Some dispersal guilds responded weakly, and additional seed introduction may be needed. The study informs fire-adapted systems, not a general fire-frequency target.

Prairie planting-year weather can echo into the third growing season

Evidence
Peer-reviewed restoration cohort experiment
Geography
Kansas, USA
System
Restored tallgrass prairie

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Planting cohorts started every two years; early precipitation differences were important predictors of community dissimilarity into year three, while forb and C4 grass cover responded differently to establishment temperature and rainfall.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Restoration records need the climate experienced by a seed mix, not only the seed label and later management. Establishment-season weather can create lasting trajectories.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

One region and a limited early-establishment horizon; responses do not yield transferable rainfall thresholds.

Aridification is separating above- and belowground biodiversity along different thresholds

Evidence
Peer-reviewed spatial field survey
Geography
Arid and semi-arid grasslands of northern China
System
Arid / semi-arid grasslands

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across a 4,000-km field survey, soil conditions and biological groups showed sequential threshold responses to aridity. Plant, bacterial and fungal diversity generally declined beyond their thresholds, while archaeal diversity increased. Salinity became more negatively associated with plants, bacteria and fungi as aridity increased, and plant–bacteria and plant–fungi diversity relationships strengthened in drier sites while plant–archaea relationships decoupled.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A single biodiversity metric will miss how dryland systems reorganize. Aboveground plants and different microbial groups can cross different thresholds and even move in opposite directions, so resilience monitoring should couple vegetation with soil conditions and multiple microbial groups where feasible.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The study substitutes a broad spatial aridity gradient for temporal change; it therefore identifies field associations and thresholds rather than experimentally proving the trajectory of future aridification. Results may be region- and taxon-specific.

Tallgrass-prairie productivity models worked well—until management got intensive

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Central Oklahoma, USA
System
Native tallgrass prairie working lands

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers compared eddy-covariance-derived gross primary production with two remote-sensing/light-use-efficiency models across six native tallgrass prairie pastures of roughly 32–64 ha. The sites differed in burn interval, grazing intensity and haying. Enhanced Vegetation Index was the strongest predictor of measured GPP, and modeled GPP tracked measured dynamics well overall (R² about 0.72–0.85). But annual cumulative GPP was overestimated by roughly 15–30% in intensively grazed and hayed pastures, while a lightly grazed pasture showed only 0–2% overestimation.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For managers using satellite productivity or carbon products, management intensity is part of the calibration problem. A model can perform well across a region yet still bias the sites where grazing, haying or species composition most strongly alter green biomass. Ground-truthing the management extremes may be more useful than assuming a single regional correction.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The six pastures are co-located in one central Oklahoma research landscape, so management, soils and weather do not span the full tallgrass-prairie domain. GPP is carbon uptake, not net ecosystem carbon storage, forage quality or biodiversity. Management treatments and C3:C4 composition are not fully randomized experimental factors.

Steppe-bird home ranges are built from a literature skewed toward western European adult males

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Palaearctic steppe-bird literature
System
Steppe birds and agricultural landscapes

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A systematic review and multi-species meta-analysis retained 39 primary studies on seven non-passerine steppe birds. Most research came from western Europe and arable landscapes, with sparse coverage of natural grasslands, shrublands, eastern Europe, western and central Asia, northern Africa and wintering ranges. Adult males in the breeding season made up 75.6% of 623 tracked individuals. VHF dominated the published estimates, and comparable GPS estimates tended to produce larger and more variable home ranges.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A home-range number is not portable across sex, season, habitat and tracking technology. Environmental assessment and conservation planning can look precise while inheriting a deeply uneven evidence base.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a synthesis of published studies, so the result partly reflects what researchers chose and were able to publish. It maps evidence gaps and methodological heterogeneity rather than establishing one correct home-range size or a universal buffer distance.

For monarch habitat on rangelands, the grazing regime changed milkweed more consistently than it changed every floral resource

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Central North Dakota, USA
System
Northern Great Plains rangeland

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Comparing modified twice-over rest-rotation, patch-burn and season-long grazing in 2021–2022, researchers found higher milkweed abundance under modified rest-rotation. Floral resources showed a strong year-by-regime interaction, including a drought-driven collapse and rebound in patch-burn pastures. Adult and juvenile monarch abundance correlated positively with milkweed.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The result makes disturbance timing and drought context part of pollinator-habitat management rather than treating grazing systems as fixed labels.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Two years at one research landscape cannot establish a universal grazing prescription or demographic benefit to monarch populations. Milkweed abundance and observed monarch counts are not equivalent to population growth.

A two-year North Dakota comparison found more milkweed under modified rest-rotation grazing, while drought created a strong year-by-regime response in flowers.

Designing a seed mix for an ‘invasion-resistant’ trait did not reliably make the restoration invasion-resistant

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Wyoming and California, USA
System
Perennial mixed-grass prairie and annual interior grassland

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers established drought-tolerant, invasion-resistant, functionally diverse and random-control seed mixes in two contrasting grasslands, then imposed a 50% precipitation reduction and annual-grass invasion. Drought-tolerant communities maintained growth better at first, although the effect weakened across repeated drought and release, while the proposed invasion-resistance traits did not consistently reduce invader establishment. Drought-tolerance traits unexpectedly performed best against invasion.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The counter-signal is to trait-based confidence itself: naming a mechanistic target does not mean we understand the trait bundle well enough to engineer the outcome. Diverse strategies may sometimes be a better hedge than optimizing a seed mix around one presumed resistance mechanism.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The experiment involved two grassland systems and specific trait definitions; annual-dominant communities were especially difficult to steer. The result does not show that trait-based restoration is ineffective, only that target traits require empirical validation under the stressors they are meant to solve.

SOURCE

Ecological Applications
